Ti 6AL-4V ELI is the reliable workhorse of the medical technology industry. It is also known as Grade 5 Eli or simply Eli. Sometimes Eli and Grade 5 are confused or used interchangeably.
Designations
Mat. Nr. 3.7165
ISO 5832-3

Div. 6-4 ELI
ELI
As a special version of standard TiAl6V4, TiAl6V4 ELI, the material 3.7165 is standardized according to ASTM F136 and is used in medical technology. Due to the high requirements on the chemical composition and the mechanical values, this special grade is listed under Titanium Grade 23 to clarify the distinction from Titanium Grade 5.
What does ELI stand for?
The acronym "ELI" in Ti-6Al4V-ELI stands for "Extra-Low Interstitials". Ti-6Al4V-ELI is a grade of titanium alloy that has reduced levels of interstitial elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon, which can improve the material's mechanical properties, particularly its toughness and ductility.
Applications
This makes it particularly suitable for biomedical implants, where its biocompatibility and corrosion resistance are also important factors.
It is suitable for orthopaedic implants, surgical instruments, bone screws and plates, medical devices, cryogenic applications and some components are used in aviation and aerospace technology. This titanum is also used in watch making and jewellery.
Protasul®-64 WF by Zimmer (prev. Sulzer) is a variation of this grade. The main difference is that the oxygen content can be higher in Protasul. Sulzer allows 0.2% (same as standard Grade 5), while standard Eli caps the Oxygen at max 0.13%.
